Craigslist posting

Browsing the furniture-by-owner section of Craigslist again and came across this listing.

I guess most people would maybe do the same (I have actually given away many things that have been donated to me or things I just don't need/use anymore versus selling) but the poster is trying to make a profit off something that was DONATED by the previous owner. Now, I could see selling them for cheap (or free) but when they typed, "I am told they should be worth at least $2000 but we are open to an offer," it sets a precedence that even though you can make an offer we would like to expect something close-to or half-of the "worth" price.

It reminds me a lot of those posting where people say, "Free Oak" if you come out and dig up the tree. Or "Free Rose Bushes" if you come and dig them up. They really aren't "free" because there is more effort involved than just coming to get the items.

Oh well.

Craigslist posting

Perusing Craigslist again today and came across a few mentionables but thought I would post this one.

What do you do when you want to change up your yard and don't want to do the labor? Post a listing on Craigslist for "Free [insert item here]" and hope people are dumb enough to respond.

Actual posting here while it lasts.

So, this guy is offering free shrubs. Are they really free? Hell no! The "buyer" has to put out the effort to dig the fuckers up and haul them away. Then they have to put out the effort to plant them wherever the hell it is they plan to.

Is it really a bargain? Some may think so but I'm not doing some other person's labor for free. You might as well tell your boss you are going to work your 8-hr shift today wage-free.

The only way I could see this being a bargain is if some landscaper just happens to need this type of bush, digs them up, takes them to the job where they are needed and charges the customer a hundred bucks or so. Then this would be a great deal.

Oh well. Back to my mundane job!

There has to be a better term

I'm a frequent Craiglist browser. I want decent quality stuff for (preferably) free or very cheap. I'm always on the prowl for an "office" desk. If you search the "desk" on Craigslist under furniture or even free stuff, you get a lot of listings. Although, I would say that 1 out of 10 is for what I am interested.

So, the first two pictures are what I would call an office desk. They have good surface area for a computer and desk top stuff, drawers to hold supplies, and look fairly sturdy. The first one was listed as "Office Desk" and the second was listed as "Double Pedestal Desk." Neither one of them is definitive in what they are but are near/exactly what I would expect when looking for an office (home or business) desk.

The next desk was listed under "Office Desk." You see right off the confusion this causes with picture #1. This is not a desk no matter how it is technically used. This is a table. Some could call it a work table of sorts. Maybe even desk table. This is most definitely not what I would call an office DESK.

This final desk was listed under something like "Modern/Contemporary Computer Desk." Granted, it looks exactly like what I would expect from the listing with the words "computer desk" in it but the first two pictures could be computer desks too.

I don't care what the listings are. I just wish the listings or Craigslist could help make it be more specific so I don't have to click on the link to find out that it isn't the type of desk for which I am looking. It would be kind of cool if Craigslist would integrate a picture/icon/avatar of sorts and then the listing description so we wouldn't have to waste time clicking into the listing then hitting the browser's back button. Maybe this is the way Craigslist boast it's "hits per page," I don't know. I've seen this type of image listing on other website but I think they are more of the for-profit sites versus free listings.

Anyway, I just figure with the leaps and bounds in technology, Craigslist could upgrade the listing procedures or at the least help define specific products more clearly. I'd probably have more luck winning the lottery.

Craigslist posting

Perusing Craigslist again and came across this post.

What's stupid about it is...would you be willing to submit an offer without seeing the merchandise? I mean come on people. If you want to sell something, especially a USED product, you really should give the potential buyer a decent quality picture. It's not like it costs money these days to "develop" a digital picture. Take a digital snapshot...if you don't have a digital camera you shouldn't be allowed to used the Internet...hook the camera to your PC or just use the memory card and upload the picture. Voila! Easy as chocolate pie!

If you can't give your potential buyers/customers this little bit a simplistic courtesy, I hope your posts go unanswered for eternity.

By the way, my offer is $5.00. Take it or leave it!

Craigslist posting

Sometimes I find the jewels of Craigslist.

I ask once again, "Why does someone want someone else's REAL junk?" This is definitely not one of those "one man's junk is another man's treasure" deals. Just recycle it in the first place! Also, I can't believe they put a time limit on when you can acquire this beauty. C'mon!

Oh well!

More Craigslist posting

Was perusing my old favorite web sit, Craigslist, and saw this (see the yellow "glowing" area):

I thought it was funny. Apparently it was already "flagged" and there was no actual ad to read. Still funny.

Craigslist posting

So, today, I saw this listing on Craigslist:

1st question is: did this parent not teach their daughter about renter's insurance?

2nd question is: if the parent is paying the rent, have they not heard of renter's insurance?

I hate to do it too but when I don't have the expendable cash for my books, it's a beautiful thing to have a credit card!!

Credenza

I've been in the market for a credenza. I've been looking for one for a few months. I didn't want an expensive one although there are some really nice and fancy ones. I just wanted something that looked nice, matched my office desk, made of wood (not that particle board shit), had lots of storage space and decently priced. I really don't need matching but my wife does because my "office area" is at one end of our fairly long and spacious bedroom. Why it has to match I don't know since the bedroom isn't exactly a conversation area nor is it on the main level so no one is really going to easily see anything in it. I just do what the wife says...on this anyway.

I have been scoping out Craigslist to find this much needed but worth tthe wait piece of furniture. In fact, I checked daily, sometimes hourly, at the free listings with a picture and the furniture section keyword: desk, has a picture and a max of $100 - although that is even above what I want to spend. The $100 max though can include a credenza AND a desk, or a shelf, or a whatever. So, although $100 isn't what I truly want to spend, if I can get something really good and worthy along with the credenza then it might be worth it.

What you find on Craigslist and even one place I will mention further into this post is that people think highly of their shit. In fact, some people are literally selling some shitty piece of furniture for the price of something comparable for brand new or even a slightly higher price BUT brand new. Now not all of the furniture is shitty but when people spend $500 and want $250, I'm not sure Craigslist is where it's going to sell. In fact, I saw a decent but used desk and sort of modified (the middle drawer was altered to sort of be a keyboard drawer) go from $100 to $60 over a period of almost two months and it still hasn't sold. Now, I'm not stupid and I'd be the same - I'd want something in return for my buying it originally but at the same time, if it's just been sitting in storage somewhere it wasn't exactly making money for you (me) anyhow. It's a tough decision, I know. But as a buyer, I'm not paying too much for something used or very used just because the seller feels like they deserve more money than it's worth.

Anyway, I finally got a chance to run by a store that has listed items on Craigslist called The Benefit Store. I went last weekend and spent about 30-45 mins walking the place and looking at different desks and credenzas. I saw some really nice ones but they were way out of the price range I was looking to spend. Some were probably pretty worth their price or close to it but no way could I afford $700 for a really cool credenza...but it was a pretty cool piece of furniture.

I ended up getting this baby. It was decently made, all wood and CHEAP! It was heavy and I got it upstairs to my bedroom all by myself. I'm just superman, I know! I got about 3/4 of the way up the stairs and I started thinking to myself, "What the hell was I thinking trying to do this myself?" The problem was I couldn't go back down the stairs because it was further than finishing pulling it up. So, I persevered!

Anyway, I'm thinking about a cheap hutch-type addition to the credenza or my current desk. We'll see what I can find. Of course, the wife says, "That's cool but make sure it matches!"

Easy instructions to follow, right....?

Another funny Craigslist posting. It's already been tagged for removal from the "FREE" listings:

Another stupid craigslist listing

C'mon people! I mean really, what is ONE DVD+R going to do for ANYONE!? You have got to be the biggest dumb ass if you actually took the time and effort to go get this.

Nothing against the poster, other than it's funny, but with gas almost $4/gallon you'd be better off purchasing a DVD+R 25-pk or higher than running to get this ONE disk. That is of course unless you lived right next door or a little ways down the street from this person so you could walk.

I appreciate the effort to reuse or recycle but seriously!

Stupid Craigslist listings

I'm all for the freebie. Those who know me know that about me all too well. I'm not a cheapskate. I just think there is no better price for something I want, need, or can use than FREE! Who doesn't agree with me? See, you are all cheapskates too!

But as you can see from these few lines off the FREESTUFF section of Craigslist, why the hell would I want a free Zenith 36" TV that needs a power supply or a not working TV/VCR combo? That shit obviously costs the lister too much money to repair/fix/buy a part so what makes them think that the ordinary Joe that looks at the free listings on Craigslist want or be able to spend that kind of money?

C'mon people! Wake the hell up. Like my eBay bidders rant but maybe not really. I mean if it costs $100 for a power supply why wouldn't I just spend that or $200 or even $300 on a brand new television?

It's common sense! And don't even get me started on the free dirt, free rock, free fire wood, and free mobile home. Hell, I got free rock in my yard too just come out and dig it up. Free dirt too. Shit, just take the dirt and rock together to save time. While you are at it, cut a couple of my trees down for the free fire wood. As log as you haul it off and do all the labor, it's free! Yippee!

See, I went there. Not my fault. Momentary lost of sanity.

Stupid Craigslist listing

I'm not sure I understand why this person didn't list the movies he is giving away. Could it be porn and he didn't want his listing to be flagged? Who knows but it seems like a good way for someone to capture emails for spamming later.

C'mon dude, don't be afraid to let the world know that you are finally parting with your Debbie Does Dallas 1 & 2 DVD collection!!

In the news 04/22/2008

Saw this news story on the DallasNews.com. I'm sure the link will expire but the gist of what I saw in the article that really bothered me is the last sentence...
His salary was $20,670, school officials said.
Since they didn't give any details on why this guy quit his job, my assumption would be because of the shitty pay! I mean come on, $20k for being responsible for a school's entire computer network and equipment??!?? That's like those "photographers" on Craigslist asking models to pose for TFCD (trade for CD) which basically means do it for FREE!

Oh well! I move on...
