High school band trip to Honolulu, Hawaii
So, my kids are privileged. Okay, not really. But they do go to a public high school that is 97.5% full of the privileged. We are able to benefit from this because we rent in the area versus buying. We are in what the "real" residents call a "multi-family dwelling." We'd NEVER be able to buy...not necessarily because I won't ever make that much money...okay, I won't ever make that much money...but not because I can't. It's because I won't waste my life working to afford something that isn't a necessity in my life. I'd much rather make enough to live and enjoy not working all the time.
Anyway, the marching band at this high school announced during summer 2013 band camp that they were going to Hawaii for this year's band trip. More specifically they would be marching in the Honolulu St. Patrick's Day Parade in Waikiki Beach on March 17, 2014 at 12 p.m. Most all of the kids were pretty stoked. Many of the kids probably have already been to ritzy vacation areas——maybe places like Vail, Cancun, Bahamas, and any popular destinations for the rich in North America, South America, Europe, Asia...okay basically anywhere the rich take their kids.
The student price was $1,970 since they will be in a quad occupancy room. The adult price was $2,030 as they'd be in double occupancy rooms unless they decided to be in quad occupancy. I prefer double as the wife and I were planning on going. She's still fighting her illness or the side effects from the illness but we were going to use this as a celebration of her making leaps and strides to betterness.
The wife didn't get as better as we had hoped so I invited my long-time friend who's basically be demoted to a well-known acquaintance to take her place. He'd have to pay of course but I had already reserved an extra space and I didn't feel like paying double or rooming with someone I really don't know. I thought about asking the one brother I still talk to but I ended up asking the lesser of two evils. I knew my friend and I would have fun. We just don't hang out as much these days as we used to and we live 15-20 minutes away from each other and also work basically across the street from one another. Anyway, so he was the lucky one to benefit from my wife still not feeling up to traveling. I could have just not gone with my kids but this is freaking Hawaii!! And, it's one thing if they were going to one of the 48 contiguous states...well, most anyway, some I'd still want to go...but this is a flight over an ocean with my two kids. I was not going to be worried about them sitting in good ol' Texas!
The band used a travel agent which was beneficial in including a few interesting excursions that I probably would not book to do myself or even as a family. Going just as a family, everything is costly so I have to pick and choose what's best, most fun and at a fairly decent price. Sometimes though, I do things that I REALLY want to do and I will pay whatever the cost is. Luckily, the total amount we paid included these extra activities so I'd be an idiot to not take advantage of them.
WHERE WE STAYED
First of all, we stayed in the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel. Here the hotel rooms were nice enough but they weren't all that. I didn't know what to expect but it really wasn't much different inside the room than when we stayed at Aston Waikiki Circle Hotel as a family back in 2010. I don't know what the cost difference is but they obviously are owned by the same parent company. I think the Circle Hotel had a much better balcony view (beach front for us versus beach view at Beach Hotel). The Beach Hotel room was a little larger maybe a couple of feet wider and longer, had a few extra room amenities like a flat screen TV with a PS3 which one could rent movies or games for 'free' as part of the room cost. Who's going to spend their time in their room playing video games or watching TV when the entire island of Oahu and the ocean are there to play in is beyond me but to each his own. I'm sure the Circle Hotel rooms have been updated somewhat since 2010——maybe not larger but amenities-wise.
There was a weird thing with the "all-you-can-eat" breakfast. It was sold to us as an international buffet breakfast. In reality, it was the same shit you get at Comfort Inn, Holiday Inn or some other hotel that has "Inn" or "Suites" in the name. I'm not saying that it's bad. I'm just saying it's never what they promote and advertise. The main difference between the Inn/Suites' continental breakfast and AWBH is they didn't have the pastries prepackaged in cellophane. Inside each room there was what I'd call an "insulated" lunch tote. It was about 10" long by 6" wide by 6" deep. You took this down to the breakfast "buffet" by the pool between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. You waited in line because some hotel employee is checking your key card to make sure you room at the hotel and belong in the line to get their breakfast "buffet." Once past the gatekeeper, you had a line of like six tables and stations that had various items on them from individual serving boxed cereals, milk, muffins, donuts, various other pastries, Japanese-type breakfast items like cold noodles and then just-OK coffee. You could opt for hot breakfast items like eggs, bacon and/or waffles but they would bill your room for those items. You put whatever you could inside the tote to carry and eat in a poolside chair or back in your room. That's what the Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel calls an international buffet breakfast. The best parts of the breakfast was the poi roll/muffin with sweet poi filling. Everything else one could get at ANY hotel/inn/suite on the mainland or anywhere else I'm sure. Although the coffee wasn't memorable and the only cup they had was like the kind you'd use to rinse your mouth out at the dentist, I had to drink it because I NEED my caffeine in the morning to make it through the day especially getting up at 6:30-7:00 a.m. The urn of Kona coffee with pouches of powdered creamer we had available when we stayed at the Aston Waikiki Circle Hotel was much better than the coffee on the buffet line. Truthfully, I wouldn't have minded just hitting the corner McDonald's and paying for some spam and eggs or a sausage, egg McMuffin. But adding additional extraneous costs to my travel when the buffet is "free" was not in my game plan.
WHAT WE DID AS PART OF THE PAYMENT
Germaine's Luau — This luau was a new experience. I didn't know what to expect but if it was anything close to the luau we attended on our last visit, then it couldn't be too bad. We took a luau bus from our hotel to the location. I guess it'd be considered located on the southwest corner of the island. We had an older lady guide that was kind of annoying and funny at the same time. She was very good at sharing all her cultural knowledge of Hawaii as she's a local...born and bred. The drive to Germaine's was kind of interesting. We took a lot of highway and went through an industrial park to get to the place. I'm sure there was a time when it was mostly trees, sand and rock around the Germaine's but not so much now. Luckily for them, they are located pretty close to the beach and ocean so they are able to keep the allure of a traditional luau. The entertainment was fairly good and the food wasn't too bad. The offerings were plentiful although I would have expected a few more options. Our last visit we did the luau at the Polynesian Cultural Center. Overall, I believe the entertainment, atmosphere and dining was much better at the Cultural Center. I don't know the actual cost difference between the two different places but even if it's double or less, I'd go with the Cultural Center. Now don't get me wrong. Germaine's was a nice establishment with decent food and entertainment but it just doesn't compare to everything we got with a ticket to the Cultural Center luau.
Maita'i Catamaran — This isn't something that I would have planned to do myself. I'm not even sure that it's something to even consider. It was package in the deal so I wasn't going to miss it. It was a fairly enjoyable time to just be out on the water. The catamaran had a huge sail and at times we were really booking it. It was occasionally entertaining when some of the band kids got splashed and soaked from the bow dipping under the water a bit causing a big, splashing wave. We did get to see some dolphins swim along the boat. The ride started just off the beach in front of the Outrigger Waikiki went out towards the ocean then to slightly past Diamond Head and then back to the beach. It was probably an hour ride and the captain and deck hand were nice if not mostly silent. While it was somewhat nice and enjoyable, it's not something I think is really worth around $30. Can I mark it off my bucket list? Sure, if I had it on there but other than that I'd much rather spend $30 on some souvenirs I can take/send home. However, if it's something other people want to do, then you can't go wrong with the Maita'i Catamaran.
Pearl Harbor/Arizona Memorial — We did this when we vacationed as family a few years ago. It's the same except they finished the construction of part of the visiting center that was blocked off last time we were here. The new building is essentially a movie theater that shows photos and film clips to show the progression of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the aftermath and the subsequent USA's joining WWII. It's about a 20-30 minute movie and then you get to move to where the barge taxis will be boarded for the trip to The Memorial. One thing I did notice this time is that the visiting families with children did much better in controlling those children and having them respect the time and reverence of being on The Memorial. The landscape of the Harbor was much different too as there were not as many naval ships docked as our previous visit because the "naval war games" were not going on at this time.
Nu'uanu Pali Lookout — This was also done on our previous trip. It seems to be a part of almost every available island tour and it was worth it just as much as before. The overlooked land was more lush than before as this visit was during Hawaii's winter time. This is still a "shouldn't miss" stop for any vacationers as it's a fairly peaceful and beautiful place to visit and it's free.
THINGS WE DID OUTSIDE OF THE PLAN
We had a "your day" where there wasn't anything to do as part of the package. They did have "deals" that the band kids could've signed up for which included snorkeling in Hanauma Bay or hiking Diamond Head or parasailing somewhere. I told my kids that we already did the first two and we could parasail on the mainland but it was up to them. We/they decided upon my idea of renting a vehicle for the day to drive around to at least hit the Aloha Stadium Swap Meet as it's only open until 3 p.m. and Saturday, our free day, was Saturday. This was our only cheaper priced shopping option because The International Market Place was closed down for remodeling or something. It seems their link is currently down or wrong but you can view some online articles here, here and here while they last. Besides, last time we were here, the Swap Meet was $2-$5 lower than the Int'l Market probably due to convenience. Anyway, we hit the Swap Meet and I purchased more shirts this time around than last because I knew I'd wear the hell out of my shirts I bought. Besides, I decided this time around that if I bought too much that wouldn't fit in my carry-on, I was just going to check a bag or FedEx/UPS it to my home. My buddy also was prepared and had a checked bag that was 90% empty because he didn't know what he would come back with either. And it turns out that checking a bag is much cheaper than shipping it even via FedEx or UPS. Good call friend!
Blue Hawaii Helicopter tours — However, before the Swap Meet, we decided the day before to try something really different and definitely something my wife would not approve of. A helicopter tour with Blue Hawaii Helicopter tours. They do a tour of about half the island that starts at Honolulu Airport around and down to the southeast point then up north along the short to the northeast point and then back down the "middle" of the island to the airport. So we saw places like Diamond Head, Hanauma Bay, Oprah's house, Bird Island (I think), Schoefield Barracks, North Shore, Dillingham Airfield where some fighter jets were taking off and landing during flight exercises, some place in the lush mountainside where they were building sets for the new Jurassic Park movie and the same trail/dirt road along which 50 First Dates was filmed, Dole Plantation and few other places along the route that escape my memory at this time. It was WAY WAY cool! I'd have to say well worth the $200 each plus my buddy purchased the video for $25 (it comes on a flash drive) which includes video of inside and outside of the helicopter as well as mic/headset audio during the ride——it was cool except for one camera that was a little foggy/blurry which as part of the service and sales you'd think they'd make sure all lenses were free and clear...all in all the video was good enough for memorabilia sake. We also used two GoPros (hand-held by me and my friend however so a little bumpy). The helicopter held the pilot and six other people. Seating is based on weight distribution so my kids got the two front seats next to the pilot, I was on the outer right, my friend next to me and then a couple celebrating their 15th wedding anniversary on the left side. Our pilot was not only the pilot but a well-informed tour guide. He was good at what he did even though he looked to be the ripe old age of 18-20 years old. He may have been a little older but certainly did not look it. As stated, it was a good time!
Keneke's — My friend and I didn't visit the original location that I did in 2010. Instead, we ran into the location listed on the website. I asked the lady inside if the other location was still open (it was really just a hole-in-the-wall place) and she said yes. However, the website only lists one location so I'm not sure about the other. I would say that I felt like the food seemed a little tastier at the 2010 location but I'm not going to complain too much because it's ALL good going down!
Oceanarium Restaurant in the Pacific Beach Hotel — My friend and I ate dinner at this place. I ate here with the family the last visit so I recommended to my buddy to eat here again. It still looked the same as before but I think the food offerings were a little more. It's probably the difference between lunch and dinner but I don't know for sure as I didn't ask. The food was pretty good like before but there was no female diver feeding the fish in the giant tank.
Me's Bar-B-Que here or here — There was one day where the band kids had a lunch-is-on-you in between required activities. My friend and I wanted something more local like Keneke's but we couldn't travel too far due to the kids' responsibilities. Our last visit we walked by this place, Me's, on our way to L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. We thought about stopping but stuck with our original goal of trying L&L. This time with the kids, L&L was a possibility but it is a good walk from our hotel. Again, the time constraints were considered and we decided to stop at Me's Bar-B-Que. It wasn't too busy (see pic below). Me's had plenty of options familiar and not-so-familiar to choose from on their menu...way more options than the L&L Hawaiian BBQ in Plano, TX. Anyway, we ordered and everything was pretty damn good! Very good like Keneke's on our last visit although a few more items we were able to try/eat than offered at Keneke's. All in all, it was pretty good food for a decent price. I wish I had room in my belly to try everything on the menu. If you want something more of a local cuisine, definitely try this place. It looks a little scary (especially seeing the "Rent scooters here" sign and scooters right next to the seating area) but it's really good!

In the news 02/26/2013
Just my two cents:
If you take away the pirating issue (Argh!), I'd say the recording industry had a harder time "making money" because people were able to pick two songs individually that they liked for about $3 versus purchasing an entire album with 12 addt'l songs they didn't want at $17.99+...not to mention that the overall quality of a song these days has gone down drastically.
Even when music was (IMHO) better, there aren't many albums which I liked ALL the songs. I can probably count on one hand how many I did but even then I only purchased the album for a few songs and figured I'd listen to the other songs. 98% of the time the songs they didn't play on the radio but were on the album weren't very good and that's why they packaged it together.
Anyway, when the RIAA and MPAA start putting out GOOD or even BETTER products, I'm sure they'd make tons of money like before but more from a good product rather than shoving shit mixed in with the good.

Farmers Branch Liberty Fest 2011
I kept telling my friends that it was Frisco not Farmers Branch but what did I know. I was invited by the mother of a friend of my oldest's. This mother is a big fan of Rick Springfield and a so-so fan of The Spin Doctors.
The mother invited us and paid for our tickets. They were $5 each so it wasn't a big purchase but it was a very nice gesture on her part. The regular cost if I went to the website is like $15. Anyway, again, we were grateful, cordial and we actually had a pretty decent time as a couple and as a family hanging with friends.
We got there about 4:30pm but the concert was scheduled to start until 7pm. We found a close seat on the grass fairly close to the stage. It was hot. It was really hot. The closer we got to the stage the more of a tree line which meant less of a breeze.

Okay, so too much time has passed since I attended this event and started typing this post. If you want more information, you can visit the home page and/or see Photos from PegasNews.

Skullcandy 2XL Shakedown Full Suspension Headband
So, here are a few things I can share about these little babies:
- They don't exactly feel like the sturdiest headphones but they seem to be durable enough so far. I didn't expect top-quality but the plastic feels frail like a plastic water gun but also durable like that of the smaller Nerf guns.
- The cord is a little shorter than most headphones cords. I would guess it's like three feet versus the typical six feet. Do you really need that extra three feet? Sometimes. I mean if you are using the MP3 player pocket in your backpack while listening with these headphones, there may be an occasional pulling or tugging on the phones. I guess it entirely depends on how far down the MP3 player pocket is or how low you let your backpack hang down your ass. Either way, I wouldn't think three feet is very accommodating. At the same time, I had some earphones that had the six foot cord and at times I felt like it was too long.
- These are definiley on-ear headphones. They may be over-the-ear for some people with smaller heads/ears, like my kids, but they are on-ear for me. No a big deal, but don't expect them to be long-term comfortable.
- Speaking of comfortability. These are mildly comfortable after wearing for some time but sometimes get uncomfortable after much longer. The ear muffs are not the softest but I expected as much. I've worn them for an entire movie with mild irritation after 1 1/2 to 2 hours. Again, the muffs do not contain the most padding and the plastic/pleather covering tends to cause slight perspiration. I think I've experienced the perspiration with high-end headphones as well...it's just what happens when you cover your ear with no air circulation so I don't blame it on these. The headband securely holds the muffs on my ears but because of the lack of softness, my ears have gotten irritated a few times after extended use.
- The sound seems to be pretty good. I'm no audio expert but for what I've used them for, they have performed well. Decent bass and treble with enough seal on the ears to block out background noises...to an extent. I haven't reached that extent but I'm sure there is an "extent."
- These aren't ear buds. They are a little more cumbersome than ear buds...okay, a lot. These are not the type to fit snuggly and take up little space in a backpack or purse or whatever. Again, I didn't plan on walking around town with them...very often if at all...but I do like to be able to use headphones over ear buds on occasion.
I guess that's about all I can say about these so far. I use them on occasion like I said. The kids have started using them a little more than their ear buds but it turns out it's because they often misplace their buds and they have the headphones as back up. I think thye still sell these on their eBay listing for about the same price. It might be a decent gift for a teenager or a non-audiophile snob.
Just a shot of one of my headphones in the package before opening.
Products I've used by Altec Lansing
There are a few things that worth noting (good and bad) about this item:
- Two apps are available for free. One is a Altec mix app that allows this speaker to play two separate iPods at the same time or mixing the tracks from two separate iPods. I haven't used this function yet but it looks interesting enough...although I have all my songs on one iPod Touch and my kids have a selected few from mine on their Touches so I'm not sure I have a need for this app. The second app is Altec's alarm app. You download this to use the speaker as an alarm clock. Two issues with this app is that you have to have the app active and the alarm ON for it to work and you also have to make sure you have the corect source activated for the iPod and speaker to work together as an alarm. It's taken a few times but my kids have occasionally forgotten to make sure the iPod is the selected source. So come morning, they wake up late and in a tizzy wondering why the alarm didn't go off. I think it teaches them a little bit more about responsibility but I can see where it is frustrating to them as well. Other than that, the alarm app works perfectly...allowing you to wake to whatever music/song you have selected.
- The speaker system does not have a battery-powered only option. For an original price of $99, I would think this would be a no-brainer. This option missing isn't a total deal breaker but it does make it inconvenient for this to be portable since you'll need to have access to a power outlet.
- The sound produced from this speaker system seems pretty good for my non-audio expert ears. It produces sounds rich and loud enough to fill a 20' x 20' room without distortion. It does get loud enough to cause some distortion but it is not necessary to get that loud for my kids' use. If you need something that loud without distortion, this wouldn't be an option anyway. You might as well connect this to some kind of sound system or boom box that is made for "booming" sound.
- This thing is basically an external or add-on speaker for your iPod. It has no functionality built within other than switching ON/OFF or sources. For this reason, I would not recommend purchasing this for $99 but I would say that I got a pretty good deal at $59. That would be what I'd look for is a good deal on this that makes it about half price of what it's going for right now.
- The remote control is nice and very functional. It is a bit small, like the size of the silver dollars of old, so it could be easily misplaced. At the same time, the size is nice enough to put in your pocket without being bulky. It has a decent range on it but I haven't tested the quoted versus actual distance and probably never will until the moment when I get pissed because I'm too far for the signal to work. The remote has forward, reverse, pause, play, stop, volume up, volume down, mute, on, off and source select. I think it works nicely with the simple system.
Muzx XX or XY Passive Noise-Cancelling Ear Buds by Altec Lansing.
These ear buds came as a "gift" with the M202. Actually, the M202 came with two sets of these buds. I haven't had the chance or a need, yet, to use them so I can't share my experience. I can say that they come in a variety of colors. I was able to select the colors I wanted during my M202 order. I think these run like $19.99 last I looked so to get two sets for free is a damn good deal in my eyes. Again, I can't testify to the sound quality but two save $40 (which I wouldn't spend in the first place) is well worth the chance to test these out...when I get a chance. I could open them and use them once but why because I already have fully functioning/working ear buds that I'm happy with. Until they break, I won't be opening these XX/XY buds.
So, in conclusion, the M202 is working fantastically so far since March 2011. My kids have had no complaints and they use the speakers for more than just the iPod. My oldest uses it to hook up to the laptop and watch Netflix or listen to YouTube videos. If you can get them for a good deal as I did, I don't think you'll be disappointed as long as you know what you want out of them and the limits to them.

Some of the greatest songs, in my opinion
So, I looked for diversity at work. I found it in 181.FM. It repeats some songs as well but the songs themselves aren't repetitive with their lyrics so it makes them way more tolerable. Also, they sometimes flash me back to times through my life.
Anyway, I heard a few songs that made me think that they are timeless. Songs that have been passed from generation to generation and still hold their own to the "music" of today. Here is a list of what I've heard and consider somewhat timeless and great songs (I also added songs from the 80s just because I can).
- When A Man Loves A Woman by Percy Sledge
- Kokomo by The Beach Boys
- Black Water by The Doobie Brothers
- Hot Blooded by Foreigner
- Double Vision by Foreigner
- Blinded by the Light by Manfred Man
- Bennie and the Jets by Elton John
- Tequila Sunrise by The Eagles
- Lyin' Eyes by The Eagles
- Hotel California by The Eagles
- Take It to the Limit by The Eagles
- One Way Or Another by Blondie
- Rock'n Me by Steve Miller Band
- Fly Like An Eagle by Steve Miller Band
- Abracadabra by Steve Miller Band
- Babe by Styx
- Get Down Tonight by KC & The Sunshine Band
- That's The Way (I Like It) by KC & The Sunshine Band
- (Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty by KC & The Sunshine Band

Apparently Santana was the bomb in the 60s and 70s
I was in the mood to listen to some 50s/60s rock and roll through Winamp. I "searched" through their web browser in SHOUTcast's server. I put in 50s and I got some songs I wanted to hear but a lot I didn't.
I then saw some other channels listed for 50s, 50s-60s, 60s, 60s-70s, 60s-70s-80s...you get the picture. I tried a few and they sucked. Then I found one that was named "181.FM - Classic Hits --- Home of The 60's and 70's" and thought it could be a good one.
It was...at first. The moment I got connected it had a couple of decent songs. Then a Santana song came on...completely instrumental and too damn long! I was like, "Did my channel change?" It did not change.
Finally, the song was over after like six minutes and another decent song played. About three songs later, another Santana song played. It wasn't as long or as boring. A few more songs by the likes of Rod Stewart, Beatles, Elton John and others. Then another Santana song. Five songs later, another Santana song. I'm so done with Santana unless it's "Santana feat. Michelle Branch" or "Santana feat. Rob Thomas." You get where I'm coming from.
I think you have to be in the right mood for continuous Santana, somewhat high, or maybe Mexican/Puerto Rican.
So, I know that this is just someone's stream of music so it's not like a huge radio station or something but there has got to be a better way to randomize your Santana collection into your broadcast.
I'm still listening to it to give it a fighting chance. We'll see how it goes.

The Zune HD still exists?
I am tempted to get one just because but I don't know why I would. For one, I have heard a whole heck of a lot about Zune in a long while. I'm not sure if it'll be a shelved product and if you buy one and it goes bad then you are S.O.L. unless you can find a web site to purchase parts and attempt repairs yourself. For two, I already own an iPod Touch 64GB and am pretty happy with it. The wife would probably Bobbitize me if I bought one.
I don't mean to sound like I'm dogging Zune. I had a refurbished Zune 30GB I got from Woot years ago and it lasted me about 3 1/2 to 4 years. That's right...as a refurb! I loved that little brick. It was well worth the $65 I paid for it. In fact, I was supposed to get the dookie brown one and they ended up sending me a black (onyx?) one for some reason. It also came with a neat accessory pack with accessories. I was quite happy with my Zune. I would still be if I would have paid more attention in my attempt at replacing the battery when it finally decided to no longer hold a charge. Long story short, I purchased the battery on a website I found. I opened the Zune and started removing something before I realized I didn't have to remove shit because I was replacing the battery. But for some reason when I started my repairs, I was thinking I was replacing the hard drive. Dumb ass! So, when removed shit that I didn't need to, I accidentally broke something off that would have required a very fine point soder and I just didn't have the equipment...not to mention a few days later I lost the small metal pieces altogether so now I was stuck with a real, non-working brick! I investigated more repair options and found that I could just buy a brand new Zune 120GB for about the same amount of money I'd spend on the multiple parts I fucked up in my "repairs." Needless to say, I was bummed but I had a backup, albeit bigger, MP3 player in my Creative Zen Vision W.
I really liked the Creative MP3 players. They were very good and much cheaper. My first MP3 player I got off eBay for about $50. It was the Creative Nomad Zen Xtra and it was considered "old" by the time I purchased it. For my purposes of strictly listening to my music, it worked flawlessly. I ran into problems with the headphone jack. It was getting loose and would lose connection. The player was easily opened for repairs and I was able to solder the connection. It continued to work solidly for about two years until I dropped it and broke the headphone connection completely off the circuit board along with parts of the circuit board. Bummer!
I then got a couple of those Creative Muvo 128MB flash players for the kids and they were okay for them. I upgraded them a year or so later to the Creative Zen V Plus 2GB.
Anyway, I think I'm getting a little off topic here. I just wanted to show that I am diverse in my MP3 player purchases. I read reviews. I search the web for the best price. I then ponder on whether I really need it or not. If I do, I take the chance. Luckily, the chance has been worth it so far.
When I first started seeing stories about the Zune HD, I was totally stoked! I didn't want to get the iPod Classic/Touch because I didn't want to be stuck with iTunes. I wasn't all about the apps the Apple provided either. I just want my music, all my music (hence the 64GB Touch I bought), easily accessible in one place. I thought about getting the iPod Classic before going with the iPod touch because I really didn't need the "touch" part. I'm glad I did as I have used the touch part quite a bit but mainly to support my choice for it over the Classic. I still like the Classic and wish I had 160GB of space just because that's a lot of space!
So, is it worth jumping on the Zune HD deal? Should I look into the Zune 120GB? Should I get the iPod 160GB? Upgrade my iTouch to the newest generation with the cameras?
Decisions, decisions...

Christina Aguilera - attractive or not so attractive?
After the whole Arquette/Cox break-up notification, I saw an article about Christina Aguilera. It had this picture. It got me thinking: Is she pretty, really?
Upon further examination this photo and many others, she's got a shitload of makeup on. You can see all the base she uses. It changes her complexion. Maybe she wants it to but still, it's slightly disgusting in my opinion.
Add the heavy eyeliner, the thick, bright red lipstick, the overly blond hair and it gets me to to thinking, "Does she take it all off when she goes to bed?" If she does, "What does she look like in the morning?"
Now, I'm not so superficial to think that she doesn't have some sort of prettiness (hopefully) under all that makeup but if she did, why does she have to cover it up so much?
She's not the only celebrity...hell, every-day people...that does this. I think it's stupid. Some people I have seen around town that changed their color from their face to their neck. It's weird.
Anyway, I just thought I'd let out some verbal diarrhea about it.

Stupid people at work...again
I've posted about the stupid people at work and specifically the stupidest girl at work.
So, Monday she called in sick to our boss who has been out of town on recruiting trips for almost a month straight. The boss often has been sickly on the various trips and when she got back in town, she still came into the office. I'm not promoting it. I'm just saying for reference/comparison.
So stupid girl left boss a message saying she wasn't feeling well and wouldn't be in until may be later after lunch time...approximately 1pm.
No big deal, right? Wrong! Stupid girl just happened to take off Friday for a three-day weekend where she apparently ventured to Austin, Texas for Austin City Limits. That's like three days of mindless drinking, partying and music listening. I'm sure the boss knew this was where she was going and then stupid girl calls in "sick."
Do you see where and why stupid girl gets her moniker?
Again, I don't care what the fuck stupid girl does. I care that her stupidity will somehow affect me somewhere down the road. What if I want to call in sick on a Monday? Now the boss will think, "Hm, [stupid girl] had a party weekend and called in. I wanted if [Jay] is 'playing' sick." See? It sets a trend for others that really isn't there but because of stupid girl, it's now in the thoughts of the boss.
By the way, I've told a couple of people or they were privy to the information the same time I was but they all say, "Isn't [stupid girl] too old to be doing this shit now?" She's 30...31 in a month or so. I take a more stand-offish approach and say, "30 is really just a number. Yes, maturity-wise you would think she'd be out of the going-somewhere-to-party-and-get-drunk phase but I guess everyone is different."
At the same time, stupid girl seems somewhat immature (mentally) at times. I think she spent more time acting like a frat boy in college than a sorority girl. Nothing wrong with that, but I would think the maturity eventually kind of just naturally occurs. I could be wrong since I purchase my evolutionist degree online.
So, what do you think? Is there an age that people should stop "partying"? I know partying is a very broad idea. For me a few years ago, playing Medal of Honor: Spearhead on my home LAN of seven computers was a party. Should I have grown out of that? Of course, part of your decision could be how much community partying is done (i.e. dance clubs, concerts, bars) versus in-house partying (i.e. LAN parties, house parties with close friends).
I'm a little skewed in my opinion because I don't drink or believe in completely wasting my hard-earned money. If I did drink, I don't see how economically smart it is to pay $5 for a bottle beer at some venue when I can buy a 6-12pk for the same or slightly more. I like listening to music but I don't need to see the band in person, especially from within the mosh pit or the you-got-charged-way-too-much-dumb-ass seats up front. I'm happy with just jamming to the music on my computer or MP3 player.
I'm just easy like that...easy like a Sunday morning!

Speaking of annoying singers
I hate to say it but the song is catchy. It's repetitive but not to the extreme noticeable extent of his song Baby.
He still sounds like his balls need to drop and I can't stand his "act." I know it's a marketing tool but why White singers are told to portray this ghetto image. No, it's not a hip-hop image. It's ghetto! The baggy pants. The too-big sneakers usually untied. Next he'll have a gold chain dangling that has a "J.B." or "Bieber" pendant hanging from it.
Anyway, good for this kid to come (or go) as far as he has. Apparently he and his team are doing something right no matter how much I dislike him overall.
Parents...get off Miley Cyrus already. Sheesh!
Miley Cyrus’s New Video and the Backlash it’s Receiving From - Surprise, Surprise - ParentsI usually don't give a shit about shit like this but this just goes to show you the ignorance of today's parents.
Miley Cyrus is trying to leave behind that Disney persona. And who wouldn't when it has made you famous, made you millions, and basically run its course? Why would a 17-yr-old want to continue to play some immature role in a Disney kid show? It's not a teen show as much as it is a kid show.
Oh wait, there is one person who would ride this "success" train until its horrible death...Jaleel White aka Steve Urkel.
Anyhow, she's just like any other teeny-bopper artist that is looking to grow, mature and be relevant to a different audience. I didn't hear so much flack about Justin Timberlake becoming more risque from the teeny-bopper band N'sync to singing Sexy Back.Is it a gender thing? Boys can sing, dress "dirty" as young adults but girls can't? Gimme a break!
Oh well. I just had to chime in because I'm a parent and these parents are ridiculous. As a parent, a damn good one, I have kept my kids from listening to and seeing things that I deem unworthy.
I don't particular have a huge interest in Miley Cyrus. She has pretty decent, catchy songs...even the pre-pubescent ones. She's pretty in a weird kind of way but not striking although she's getting a little better the older she's gotten...so far. And if any marketer is worth their ego, they would tell Miley to continue to accentuate her best asset: her long legs. I mean her voice is pretty decent too but sometimes I find her a little off, more slightly flat than sharp, but it could be the way the song was written and she's supposed to sound like that. I don't know.
So, anyway, parents do your parenting and lay off blaming or pointing the finger at some entertainer.
Move the eff on!

Paramore's The Only Exception
Paramore's song The Only Exception falls into this category. I liked the song. I want to continue to like the song. I currently dislike most of the song because of the repetitiveness of the words, "You are...the only exception. The only exception..." It's enough to make me want to jab dull pencils into my ears.
It's sad really because the lyrics are pretty decent (in between the repeated phrase) and the beat as well. I think Hayley is kind of hot. It's not enough for me to completely be into the song because of the damn repetitiveness. That damn repetitiveness just kills me. It's like having a broken arm in a cast and not being able to reach the itch under the cast to ease your suffering. Ugh, the repetitiveness. It's just repetitive.
Do you see what I mean?
So, if the RIAA would take a look at similar songs across multiple bands and genres, I think they would realize it's NOT the bootlegging/file-sharing. It's that the songs are good, the get played a lot, the repetitive lyrics get noticed more, and people are like, "I'm not buying this shit" or they have buyer's remorse.
I don't know. I'm done.
Oh yeah, by the way, I do hear the lyrics I just don't completely listen to them initially. I don't have to time to jump in and get invested in liking something without testing it out first because it may suck or it will be canceled like my TV shows.

Blockbuster claims bankruptcy
Blockbuster files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protectionIt's a sad day if Blockbuster completely closes for many reasons.
Click here for story while it lasts.
For one, I will lose my most favorite DVD rental membership of all time. That's right I said it. I hear Netflix is a great service and I'm sure it is. I'm just one of those that likes to get the most out of his money. For years, I didn't rent movies from Blockbuster because of their outrageous rental fee and follow-up late fees if turning in a movie late. I was a long time customer before quitting and they couldn't/wouldn't deduct these fees from my account so I dropped them like it's hot! Flash forward some 7-10 years and they had this Total Access Plan which I decided to use the trial period within the first few months they offered it. For me, it was like $14.99 plus tax. Total it was like $17 and I could rent 3 movies at a time online. I was watching like 20-30 movies a month. Hell yeah! I caught up on movies I've never seen but came out 5-10 years ago. You would not believe how far behind I was because I'm a CHEAP ass! The only movies I went to the theater to see were sci-fi like Star Wars episodes I, II, and III. I think I saw Contact, Pulp Fiction and V for Vendetta (for free) at the theater. I'm sure there were a few others that I can't recall but I was not paying $7 for a movie and now it's what, $10? Piss on that. Anyway, Blockbuster eventually added the in-store exchanges of mail-order at brick and mortar store for a free. Booyah! Another added bonus for me as the store is about two blocks away. Now, I was doubling my watching power because when I exchanged the mail-order movies at the store. I would get three movies (most of the time) and then Blockbuster would automatically mail me the next available movies in my queue. So, technically, I could have six "free" movies out at a time. I think within a years time I had watched something like 200 movies. (Yes, I had a life: I had wife, kids, work, and school. I still do. You have to make time to enjoy every aspect of a day. It's tiring but it has to be done occasionally.)
Blockbuster eventually screwed me by increasing my monthly plan but not as much or like they did late-comers. I was raised to like $17.99 plus tax which comes out to like $22. I still get unlimited store exchanges a month but they moved to three movies out at a time and they can be a combination of online and store rentals. For instance, I have two mail-order and one store rental. Until I return/exchange one, I will not get another movie. Not that big of a deal for me as my kids have gotten older and more school responsibilities, I've had to cut back on the movie watching and sometimes I'll have a movie for more than a couple of days. It bugs me but at least I'm not paying late fees on it. My coworker jumped one plan late and she went from like $22 to like $30 and she only gets like five in-store exchanges a month. She never used the in-store exchanges anyway which I thought was stupid but some of us cherished our hard-earned money than others.
So, that's where I stand on my Blockbuster Total Access Plan. If they increase my monthly dues, I will more than likely drop them. I guess it may depend on the combination of what they change: increase fee and no in-store exchanges and I'm definitely done with them.
For two, I am an immediate gratification type of guy. I want it all and I want it now. Currently, Blockbuster provides that for me. I can get a movie in the mail and then go to the store and get another. I'm almost never without a movie to watch if/when I get around to watching it. I'm also a creature of convenience and this is very convenient for me. Now that they added games, it's an even sweeter deal...although I haven't taken advantage of the games section yet because games are a longer-term commitment than a movie. I have to keep the game until I beat it and that cuts into my exchanges although since there are no late fees it probably really is a better overall deal. I don't know.
For three, my local Blockbuster store is busy every day of the week and at least most of the day. It's very well located among a wealthy neighborhood with parents that love to occupy their kids with movies/games while they do their thing and it's across the street from a college with students that are always looking to have a reason to get together with friends. I don't think it is one of those stores on the chopping block as "not profitable" so I think I'm safe for now. If they completely fold, then yes but it wouldn't be good for overall DVD/movie rental business to have one less competitor. Netflix is $8.99/mo and Redbox is $1-$2 per movie but if there is no more competition, then they would surely turn into the mindset of old Blockbuster and consider the customer as a cash cow.
I don't dish on Netflix other than what friends and colleagues have told me. Their selection of newer movies isn't as vast and their turn-around time for mailing isn't quick enough for 9 out of 10 people I know that use them. For $8.99/mo, I want...I need my immediate gratification and I don't see getting that with Netflix. Now, I know they have digital downloads but I just don't know if I'm one of those that want to use that medium yet or more consistently. I try to watch DVDs on my computer and I always get distracted and want to use my computer for something else during the time I should be watching. I like to watch on the TV and work on my laptop at the same time or even watch on my desktop computer while working on my laptop. It's probably why it takes me three hours to watch a two hour movie. :-)
I hear Redbox doesn't get new releases until a month after Blockbuster. That's not that big of a deal for me as I've already waited for the movie to begin with. Some movies I'd like to get sooner but I guess it wouldn't be too much of a hassle to wait a little longer. I'm also a little leery about giving my credit card information to a machine on the outside of a building, kind of like an ATM. I'm sure I could use it without fear. It's just odd to me.
So to hopefully close a longer story than expected, I hate Blockbuster to an extent just like other people. I'm a grudge holder and they have previously screwed me over. The way I see it is I'm the type of customer they didn't expect/want. I've taken full advantage of every aspect of the Total Access Plan and will continue to do so until I quit. 20-30 movies a month is unusual, expensive (for them), awesome (for me) and a bit weird but that's the way I need to roll to get my money's worth. The comments on some of the articles about the bankruptcy story are just downright ignorant and seems like most people need to rant about something but have directed it towards Blockbuster. Actually, most of the bitter ones seem to be people that got screwed in the past by Blockbuster when they were a brick and mortar business only. They have hung on that anger, relish in it and are giddy about the prospect of Blockbuster ending. I too feel this way...to an extent...but that's why I feel like I'm exacting my type of revenge with taking advantage of my rental plan. When they are only making like $0.73 per movie from me, it gives me some joy no matter how minute it may be.
Blockbuster is no different than any other business: when it's good they stick it to the customer; when it's bad they stick it to the customer. Are there really any businesses left that are loyal to long-time, loyal customers? Maybe some Maw and Paw shops somewhere but even they are in it to make a profit. Blockbuster had a management decision error just like the music industry. They didn't want to embrace a new medium: BB --> mail-order/online movies; RIAA --> MP3/online streaming. It's not the company as a whole but the supposedly higher-ups that know everything but really don't know jack shit!
Well, there you have it. My daily rant while at work. It's a good thing the office is dead and the boss is out of town.

Blue Man Group
My first thought is "I didn't know that the Blue Man Group was still active or that anyone would care to see them anymore." Not that they are horrible or whatever. It's just that I don't see/hear them as the "in" or even "sort-of in" thing these days.
My second thought is "I haven't been to the Winspear yet." Not that I really, really care to but I would like to go once just to say, "Oh yeah, I've been there." I've heard the acoustics are phenomenal but the seating spacing isn't much better than the Dallas Summer Musicals venue at Fair Park. I'm sure I'll have some reason to attend something at the Winspear some time. It just won't be the Blue Man Group.
I remember seeing them growing up. The first time I remember seeing them is in a television commercial for some product. I don't remember which. As a teenager, they were interesting to see and watch but I don't think I ever wanted to see them in concert. I'm sure they have progressed in their performance but I still don't see them as a big attractant to pay however much they are charging.
Anyway, more power to them because they obviously have a good following if they are on tour and performing in the big venue of the Winspear versus something smaller. I guess I'll have to wait to read the reviews if I happen to see them.

Why spend this kind of money on audio phones much less ear buds?
My fear would be that I'd somehow accidentally pull the damn cord out of the ear plugs and there goes my $60 or more. The prices of some things these days. I don't think everyday-music listening needs prices like this for their products.
